Aleph Server Address Changes

TO:  Campuses with Aleph regions housed on the shared servers Delaware, Saranac and Seneca

In June 2010, OLIS sent out an announcement regarding the establishment of unique campus-specific Aleph server addresses.  The benefit is that updates to Aleph servers and hardware configurations at ITEC would have no impact on campus access to Aleph.

The OLIS and ITEC are planning to update the Aleph hardware from AIX to Linux sometime in 2012.  Specific details will be distributed to this list as the scheduling process takes shape.  PLEASE NOTE: the Linux servers will be given new names as the AIX servers are replaced.  Once that is done, the server names of Delaware, Saranac, and Seneca can no longer be used to access Aleph.

This announcement requests that you check the following to make sure the campus-specific server addresses have been updated.

  • Aleph WebOPAC URL
  • Aleph Staff GUI library.ini files
  • WorldCat Web Registry Files
  • Z39.50 server configurations

Detailed information on the above is available from the “Aleph Server Address Changes” link at: under “Aleph Version 20 Support” (logon required)

These updates can be done right now so that you do not have to worry about losing access to Aleph once the server hardware updates are done.

Vendor Record Loads

Over the last 5 years, loading of vendor records (ebrary, Springer, SerialsSolutions, etc.) has become more frequent at almost all sites.  These loads are not only becoming more frequent, but they are also substantially larger than earlier loads (e.g. Netlibrary was initially only 1,000 records at most).

In addition, there are a number of initiatives to consider PDA (Patron Driven Acquisitions) which require that MARC records be loaded tocatalogs, even though the title has not yet been “purchased”.

As of 2012, it is necessary to have a SUNYConnect Policy on Vendor Record Loads for all campuses on the shared servers (Delaware, Saranac, Seneca, and their successors).

The OLIS is working on such a policy and is also working on standards and instructions for such data loads.

At this time, the OLIS requests that ALL batchloading of records be done by OLIS, with a few exceptions.  The “exception” sites will be notified by Maggie that they are exceptions.

If you have any questions about this policy, please submit a Footprints request.  Thank you.

The “SUNY Science Direct Titles” file in Serials Solutions has been updated.  This knowledge base strives to be the most accurate and up-to-date listing of SUNYConnect ScienceDirect titles and holdings.

Currently it is tracking 2321 titles.  New titles for 2012 and changed/ceased titles have been incorporated in the update.
