RE: 18 upgrade of campus DEV regions for
— SARANAC: BSC, CAN, DEL, JEF, PUR, SUL
— DELAWARE: NEW

Your Aleph v16 DEV region will be taken down April 28 prior to 5:00am. The v18 upgrade activities will then begin. Please review the Upgrade Process Summary for the DEV region that is available on the Version 18 Upgrade Schedule. The schedule is available at: http://tinyurl.com/295tm4.

**********IMPORTANT**********

The v18 updates to the Aleph tables on the DEV side will become the basis for v18 tables updates on the PROD side. Once your v16 DEV side is shutdown, DO NOT make changes to your v16 PROD side Aleph tables. If you do continue to make changes on your v16 PROD side AFTER your v16 DEV sides is shutdown, you ****MUST**** keep track of those changes and redo them again once your v18 PROD side becomes available

You can continue all work done through the Aleph Staff GUI such as adding and editing bibliographic records and functions associated with circulation, course reserves, acquisitions and serials.

**********IMPORTANT**********

The v18 DEV region will be available in three to four weeks minimally. This time is needed to create the v18 environment that will be the basis for the v18 updates to the campus PROD region. Please note that in the v14 to v16 upgrade, new hardware servers were installed for v16. Consequently, building the v16 DEV regions was done outside of the v14 DEV/PROD server environment. With the v18 migration, all upgrade work must be done on the current v16 servers. The ITEC and OLIS staff will work diligently to create the v18 DEV regions within this constraint.

When the v18 DEV side becomes available for review, a message will be posted to SUNYLMS and a direct email will be sent to the campus Aleph contact. (Go to the URL noted above for a list of contacts.) At the time the v18 DEV sides become available, Aleph campus contacts will receive a packet of information related to installing the v18 client, using Angel for Aleph v18 update training, the WebOPAC environment, use of Sandbox, lists of any Aleph tables that campuses might need to review, and other pertinent material.

Information on what is new in v18, Ex Libris v18 documentation, and Interwise sessions are available at http://www.sunyconnect.suny.edu/olisdocs/public/Aleph/ for your review.

New Sandbox

The new version of Sandbox will be released on Friday, April 25 at 8:00am.  The new version of Sandbox will work with both Aleph v16 and v18.  To minimize what could be significant confusion, the OLIS decided to implement the new version of Sandbox with both v16 and v18 and to de-activate the old version.  The URL access to the new Sandbox remains the same at http://sandbox.sunyconnect.suny.edu.

A PowerPoint presentation is available through Angel that provides more specific information about the new Sandbox navigation and functionality. I will be sending out Angel logon information to campus contacts starting on Friday, April 25.

Two documents provide additional information on Sandbox.  Both are available at http://tinyurl.com/295tm4.  They are

  • OLIS_Announcement_Sandbox

JSTOR and EZProxy (and Athens authentication as well)

Trusted archives for scholarship
Dear JSTOR Participant,
This message contains information for those JSTOR sites that provide remote access to users either via EZProxy software or Athens authentication. We would very much appreciate it if you could forward this message to the appropriate technical contact at your organization. We apologize for the inconvenience that any of you are experiencing as a result of these issues. For current information about these and other known issues about the new JSTOR platform, you may access our updates page at http://support.jstor.org/update.html.

Sincerely,
JSTOR User Services

EZProxy

After the launch of the new JSTOR platform on April 4, many institutions using EZProxy reported that their users were having difficulties authenticating to JSTOR. Thanks to Chris Zagar, the creator of EZProxy, we now have updated configuration information to share with sites that have been experiencing problems with EZProxy/JSTOR interactions.

EZProxy server settings should be as follows:

  1. The JSTOR database definition should be:
    Option DomainCookieOnly
    Title JSTOR
    URL http://www.jstor.org/
    Domain jstor.org
    Option Cookie
  2. In addition, EZProxy must be explicitly configured to handle https. If https handling is not already set up, users will lose proxying when they arrive at the JSTOR login page, and the connection will be lost. If this is the case, SSL configuration must be performed using the information at:
    http://www.oclc.org/us/en/support/documentation/ezproxy/cfg/ssl/

We hope this information helps to resolve related access issues. Please contact support@jstor.org if you find that problems still exist after these configuration changes are in place.
Athens

Since the launch there have also been two major issues identified with Athens access to JSTOR. The first is that the new JSTOR system is not retaining Athens authentication details under certain situations. The second issue is that links from MyAthens pages are not being directed to the right place. The JSTOR technical team is urgently working this afternoon to correct these issues. We are currently testing the fixes and are targeting to apply them within the next 24 hours.
